David Hockney (born July 9, 1937) is a British painter, printmaker, stage designer and photographer. David Hockney won the Gold Medal of the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1962. In 1963, the artist had his first solo exhibition at the age of 26, and by 1970 he had the first of several major retrospectives at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, and subsequently traveled to three other European institutions. Hockney has received a number of honors in his career, including 9 honorary degrees from various institutions around the world. In 2012, Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the Order of Merit.
